Into the Shadow
With Into the Shadow, ensemble Lemniscate makes its debut in Suisse romande, appearing in Lausanne for the Société de Musique Contemporaine (SMC) on April 27, 2026. This closing project of our season explores Carl Jung’s idea of the “Shadow” — the hidden desires, fears, and unacknowledged facets that shape our inner lives.
The program immerses the audience in these shifting psychological terrains through spatialized sound and the interplay of amplified, acoustic, and electroacoustic worlds. Opening the evening, Elena Rykova’s Life Expectancy. Experience #1. The Sun transforms the stage into a surreal realm of silhouettes, breath-driven instruments, and quiet rituals, gently guiding listeners into the subconscious.
We then journey through fragmented inner landscapes with Natasha Barrett’s Islands of Lost Passports, a work that envelops the hall in swirling layers of ensemble, electronics, and immersive spatialization. Michelle Lou’s Five Phases for Ondes deepens the exploration through acoustic feedback and the Ondes Martenot, tracing the emotional phases of confronting one’s shadow. Emerging from this resonance, Lorenzo Troiani’s La voce delle conchiglie offers an intimate dialogue for bass flute and electronics — a solitary voice moving through the labyrinth of the self.
The evening closes with Vladimir Gorlinsky’s Laughing Gas, which releases the accumulated tension through playful, situational music-making. Ending in curiosity rather than darkness, Into the Shadow reveals that even our hidden sides contain the seeds of transformation, imagination, and renewal.
